India surpasses 8 million HPV vaccinations

India has surpassed 80 lakh (8 million) Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccinations, according to the Union Ministry of Health. This milestone is part of a nationwide campaign launched in February to strengthen preventive healthcare and protect against HPV-associated cancers, particularly cervical cancer.

The vaccination program, which was initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, targets girls aged 14 and above. The single-dose Gardasil-4 vaccine is provided free of charge at various government health facilities, including primary health centres, community health centres, and district hospitals. Beneficiaries can register via the U-WIN platform, and parental consent is mandatory.

Medical experts note that the vaccine is highly effective when administered to the 9–14 age group, though catch-up doses are available for those aged 15 to 45. The initiative aims to combat a significant health crisis in India, where approximately 200 women die from cervical cancer every day. States such as Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Odisha, and Mizoram are currently leading the campaign.
