Overview
India is conducting a nationwide Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination campaign to prevent cervical cancer, particularly targeting girls aged 14 and above. The initiative provides the vaccine free of charge at various government health facilities, with registration available through the U-WIN platform.
In the state of Meghalaya, the campaign initially faced significant challenges, reaching only 5% of its target with 1,841 girls vaccinated out of a goal of 39,796. Health officials attributed this low uptake to misinformation, specifically claims linking the vaccine to infertility. To combat this, the Health Department planned to intensify awareness efforts through community leaders, local language leaflets, and school sessions.
On a national scale, the Union Ministry of Health reported that India has surpassed 8 million HPV vaccinations. Several states, including Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Odisha, and Mizoram, are currently leading the campaign efforts.
