India Suspends Indus Water Treaty Over Pakistan's Support for Cross‑Border Terrorism

India’s Ministry of External Affairs said the Indus Water Treaty remains in abeyance because Pakistan continues to sponsor cross‑border terrorism. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal demanded that Pakistan "credibly and irrevocably" end such support, linking the treaty’s suspension to the Pahalgam terror attack and the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor, India's military response.

Analysts note that India now rejects third‑party arbitration on the treaty, preferring a bilateral format. Scholar Uttam Sinha described the treaty as a “serious structural stress point” in India‑Pakistan relations, suggesting a shift toward direct engagement without external mediators.
