India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 drives growth in chip design and manufacturing
At the SEMICON India 2026 event, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that approximately 200 chip design companies have emerged under the India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 (ISM 2.0). Over 105 startups have accessed advanced Electronic Design Automation tools, with 20 having secured venture capital funding. The government has trained roughly 70,000 engineers over the past four years, aiming for a total of 85,000. Additionally, five of the 12 semiconductor plants approved under ISM 1.0 have already entered commercial production.
Economic projections indicate significant growth, with semiconductor demand in India expected to rise from USD 44 billion in 2025-26 to USD 90 billion by 2029-30. MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan noted that India currently holds about 20 percent of the global semiconductor design workforce.
Regional developments include Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighting the upcoming Tata Electronics OSAT facility in Jagiroad, which is expected to produce 48 million chips daily. Meanwhile, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi unveiled plans for an 870-acre 'Odisha Silicon Valley' near Cuttack to host semiconductor and IT projects.
