India to add 5–8 semiconductor plants in next 7–8 years

During his Independence Day address from the Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India expects to have between five and eight new semiconductor plants operational within the next seven to eight years. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to achieve self-reliance and support the goal of a developed India.

Modi noted that three major semiconductor plants have already commenced operations, with some production already being exported. He emphasized that semiconductors are indispensable to modern life, playing critical roles in electronic goods, medical equipment, and transportation systems. To support these technological ambitions, the government is also focusing on securing supplies of critical minerals through the National Critical Minerals Mission.

Additionally, the Prime Minister highlighted India's industrial growth, noting significant increases in mobile phone production, electronic manufacturing, and defense production. He also addressed energy security, stating that India has set a target of 200 GW of nuclear energy and is establishing five new nuclear reactors.
