India hosts BRICS environmental and economic meetings
Under its 2026 presidency, India is hosting a series of high-level BRICS meetings in New Delhi focused on economic and environmental cooperation. The 12th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting, presided over by Union Minister Bhupender Yadav, aims to strengthen collective action on climate resilience, sustainable development, and environmental governance.
Key priority areas identified for the environmental track include promoting sustainable lifestyles, afforestation, forest fire management, disaster resilience, the circular economy, and climate adaptation. These discussions follow meetings of the BRICS Environment Working Group and the Contact Group on Climate Change and Sustainable Development.
In addition to environmental efforts, the BRICS chairmanship is addressing economic and digital sectors. This includes participation in finance ministers and central bank governors meetings to discuss global economic governance and infrastructure financing, as well as ICT working group meetings in Pune to enhance digital resilience and innovation. The overarching theme for the 2026 chairship is ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability’.
