India to implement new Bharatiya Vayuyan Niyam aviation rules in 2027

India is set to implement the Bharatiya Vayuyan Niyam, 2026, on January 1, 2027, replacing the Aircraft Rules of 1937. The new regulatory framework aims to govern the country’s expanding civil aviation sector through 220 rules covering aircraft design, certification, personnel licensing, and aerodrome operations.

Key provisions include a framework for aircraft design and component manufacturing to strengthen India’s position as a State of Design. The rules also introduce fractional ownership models and work alongside the Protection of Interests in Aircraft Objects Act, 2025, to facilitate aircraft leasing and deregistration. These measures are intended to reduce acquisition costs and ease pressure on airfares.

In a separate development, the Supreme Court of India declined an urgent hearing regarding a petition over soaring festival airfares, which reportedly increased by nearly 700 percent. During the proceedings, the bench observed, “Don’t travel by air,” a remark that has drawn criticism from citizens who argue that air travel is an essential service rather than a luxury.
