India to implement new airfare rules from January 2027

The Indian government has notified the ‘Indian Aircraft Rules, 2026’, which are set to take effect on January 1, 2027. These regulations replace the outdated ‘Aircraft Rules, 1937’ and aim to modernize air travel oversight.

Under the new framework, airlines will have the freedom to set ticket prices based on market demand and operational costs, such as fuel prices. While the government is not imposing a fixed price cap, it retains the authority to intervene directly through written instructions during extraordinary circumstances or in the interest of public welfare. Any such government intervention will be proportional and limited to a specific timeframe.

To increase transparency, airlines must submit detailed fare lists to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and publish them on their official websites. The rules mandate that the total cost be clearly displayed during the booking process, with a granular breakdown including base fare, taxes, government fees, cancellation charges, and refund terms to prevent hidden costs.
