India to introduce 100% ethanol-powered vehicles in October

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced that vehicles capable of running on 100% ethanol will be introduced in India, with a Toyota Innova flex-fuel model expected to launch in October. Gadkari noted that the vehicle's running costs would be comparable to petrol vehicles using fuel priced at approximately Rs 25 per litre.

The move aims to reduce fuel import costs, curb pollution, and increase income for farmers who can produce ethanol from crops like maize. Gadkari highlighted that India currently imports petrol, diesel, and gas worth approximately Rs 22 lakh crore annually. He also addressed concerns regarding the government’s E20 ethanol-blending policy, stating that ethanol is used in 19 other countries without widespread complaints regarding engine performance or maintenance.

Other manufacturers are also moving toward flex-fuel technology; Maruti Suzuki launched a flex-fuel passenger car in June that can operate on blends ranging from E20 to pure ethanol. Additionally, the minister advocated for the adoption of electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles to further diversify India's energy landscape.
