India flags off first LNG-powered train in Gujarat

Union Home Minister Amit Shah flagged off India’s first LNG-powered train from Sabarmati Railway Station in Gujarat. The train utilizes a dual-fuel system, having converted two 1,400 HP Driving Power Cars (DPC) to run on both LNG and diesel. This technology is expected to reduce diesel consumption by approximately 40 per cent.

During the event, Shah also inaugurated and laid foundation stones for various railway development projects in the Sabarmati division worth over Rs 1,472 crore. Key initiatives include the establishment of a Rs 700 crore WAG-12 locomotive maintenance shed and the implementation of the ‘Kavach’ automatic train protection system across 404 km of the Ahmedabad division at a cost of roughly Rs 411 crore.

Shah highlighted the progress of Indian Railways in reducing diesel dependency, noting that consumption fell from 293 crore litres in 2015-16 to 108 crore litres in 2024-25, with a goal of reaching zero by 2030. He also noted that the railway network has achieved 99.6 per cent electrification.
