India inauguration of LNG-powered dual-fuel train

Overview

India has inaugurated its first LNG-powered dual-fuel train at the Sabarmati Railway Station in Gujarat. The Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) utilizes a system that allows it to switch between diesel and liquefied natural gas (LNG), a technology expected to reduce diesel consumption by approximately 40 per cent.

While the official ceremony was led by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in late September, the train had already been in passenger service since January following field tests exceeding 2,000 kilometers. The initiative aims to lower fuel costs and reduce carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions.

The launch coincided with the announcement of various railway development projects in the Sabarmati division, including the implementation of the ‘Kavach’ automatic train protection system and the establishment of a locomotive maintenance shed. These efforts align with broader Indian Railways goals to reduce diesel dependency, with a target of reaching zero diesel consumption by 2030.
