India to promote electric trucks and expand charging infrastructure

The Indian government plans to promote electric trucks and develop rapid charging infrastructure to transition toward more readily available alternative energy sources. Tarun Kapoor, an advisor to the Prime Minister, stated during the 66th SIAM annual conference that 60 highways have been identified for the development of comprehensive charging infrastructure to support this shift.

Kapoor noted that the adoption of electric trucks could become more cost-effective if domestic battery production increases. He also highlighted the mining sector as a primary area where electric truck implementation would be highly feasible due to localized operational routes.

Separately, Partho Banerjee, President and MD of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, reported that the company is working to increase production capacity following strong demand during the Onam festival. The company has commenced operations at two plants with a capacity of 250,000 units each and expects to reach full capacity within the next three to four months.
