India unemployment rate holds at 5% in September

India’s national unemployment rate remained stable at 5% in September 2026, according to data from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. While the headline figure held steady, the report reveals significant disparities between urban and rural sectors, as well as between genders.

In urban areas, youth unemployment (ages 15–29) rose to 19%, up from 18.7% in August. Young women in urban centers faced particularly high rates, with unemployment reaching 26.6%. Conversely, urban male unemployment saw a slight decrease to 6%.

Despite rising youth unemployment, certain participation metrics improved. The urban female labour force participation rate increased to 25.9%, its highest level since October 2025. In rural areas, female unemployment dropped to 3.9%, the lowest recorded in 2026, while rural youth unemployment saw a marginal decline to 13.2%.
