India labor market and youth employment trends
Overview
In September 2026, India’s national unemployment rate remained stable at 5%, according to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. However, data indicated significant disparities; urban youth unemployment (ages 15–29) rose to 19%, with young women in urban centers facing a rate of 26.6%. In contrast, rural female unemployment reached a 2026 low of 3.9%.
Subsequent data from the National Statistics Office (NSO) highlighted a gap between official unemployment figures and the number of young people classified as Not in Employment, Education or Training (NEET). While approximately 85 per cent of districts reported unemployment rates of 5.5 per cent or less, nearly 70 per cent of districts showed that at least one in five young people aged 15 to 29 fell into the NEET category. In nearly one-fourth of districts, more than 30 per cent of the youth population was classified as NEET.
