India urges Russia and Ukraine to guarantee Black Sea shipping safety
India has called on both Russia and Ukraine to guarantee safe passage for commercial shipping in the Black Sea, citing direct risks to Indian seafarers and global food and energy supplies. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that the targeting of commercial shipping and civilian crews must end to restore unimpeded navigation through international waterways.
The urgency follows recent maritime incidents, including the sinking of the Turkish-owned MV Royad Mammadov. The vessel, which was carrying grain from Ukraine, caught fire and sank after an attack, resulting in two deaths. Three Indian nationals on board survived with injuries and were treated in Romania. Additionally, the Liberian-flagged oil tanker Aframax Rio was attacked by unmanned vessels near Sochi, though its 23 Indian crew members were rescued safely.
India holds a significant stake in maritime security, providing over 12% of the global seafaring workforce. Diplomatic discussions with both sides are reportedly underway to secure guarantees for energy infrastructure and the safe transit of grain and energy exports.
