India warns UN is losing credibility over unverified reports
India has warned that the United Nations is losing credibility due to the publication of arbitrary reports based on unverified hearsay. During a meeting of the General Assembly’s Third Committee in New York, Indian diplomat Anuj Swarup rejected a report by Special Rapporteur Gina Romero regarding the Rights to Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and of Association.
The report by Romero claimed that young people in India reported facing retaliation or stigmatization for discussing gender justice and mental health. Swarup criticized the report for relying on anonymous submissions without identifying sources, arguing that generalizing such claims for a population of 1.4 billion people is a disservice to the mandate.
In a separate critique earlier in the week, Swarup accused Human Rights Commissioner Volker Turk of maintaining double standards by failing to comment on violent responses to protests in certain regions, including the West and India's neighborhood.
