India weather alert: Heavy rain and storms forecast for multiple states
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued widespread weather warnings across numerous Indian states due to active monsoon conditions. Heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and high winds are expected in approximately 16 to 20 states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and West Bengal. Wind speeds in several regions are forecasted to reach between 60 and 70 km/h.
In hilly regions such as Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir, authorities have issued landslide warnings and advised against unnecessary travel. In the northeast, states including Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are under alerts for heavy rainfall through mid-September. Coastal areas have also been warned of high waves and storms, with advisories issued to fishermen to remain away from the sea.
While some areas like Delhi and parts of Madhya Pradesh may experience temporary breaks in rain or increased heat and humidity, a new low-pressure system is expected to form in the Bay of Bengal around September 11, which could trigger renewed heavy rainfall across central and northern India from September 12 onwards.
