Extreme weather hits India with heavy rains and Zimbabwe with intense heat

Extreme weather patterns are impacting multiple regions. In India, the onset of the northeast monsoon has triggered heavy to very heavy rainfall across southern states, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. Chennai experienced its heaviest rainfall since December 2023, with 35.8 cm recorded in an eight-hour period, causing significant waterlogging at the airport and disrupting flight operations.

While southern India faces storms and flooding, northern and central regions such as Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan are experiencing mostly dry and warm conditions, though some areas may see thunderstorms. In the mountainous regions of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, snowfall and temperature drops are expected.

In Zimbabwe, the Meteorological Services Department has issued a nationwide advisory for very hot conditions from October 18 to 20. Increased sunshine and reduced cloud cover are expected to drive significant temperature rises, particularly in low-lying areas like the Zambezi and Save Valleys, posing risks of dehydration and heat stress for humans, livestock, and crops.
