India inflation rises in August as food and wholesale prices climb

India's inflation rates saw an upward trend in August 2026. Retail inflation (CPI) rose to 4.82%, up from 4.45% in July, driven largely by rising food prices. Food inflation specifically climbed to 5.95% during the same period.

Significant price hikes were noted in essential staples. Ginger, onion, and garlic experienced high inflation rates of 73.82%, 48.27%, and 43.60% respectively. Conversely, tomato and potato prices saw deflationary trends. Additionally, silver jewellery prices surged by 107.11% due to costlier imports.

Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation also increased to 9.92% in August, up from 9.78% in July. Experts suggest that wholesale inflation could potentially breach the 10% mark in September. An ICICI Bank report noted that underlying core inflation may be stronger than year-on-year figures suggest, citing rising costs in transport, information, and communication sectors.
