Inflation trends in India and Pakistan
Overview
Inflationary trends in India and Pakistan have shown varying movements across consumer and wholesale indices. In India, the consumer price index (CPI) reached a record low of 0.25% in October 2025, driven largely by a significant plunge in vegetable prices and recent GST rate cuts. However, the Reserve Bank of India noted this moderation might be temporary.
By July 2026, India’s Wholesale Price Index (WPI) moderated to 9.78%, down from 9.87% in June. This represented the first month-on-month decline in WPI inflation since October 2025. The moderation was primarily driven by a significant drop in the fuel and power segment, where inflation fell to 20.05% from 27.41% in June.
Despite this, other sectors faced upward pressure. Primary articles inflation rose to 8.52% from 7.00%, and manufactured products increased to 8.29% from 7.48%. Food inflation remains a concern, hitting a 19-month high of 6.65% in July, up from 6.14% in June. Key drivers of the elevated WPI include mineral oils, food articles, basic metals, and chemicals. Economists suggest that while volatility in oil prices and El Nino effects may continue to pressure imported commodities and food prices, some analysts believe WPI inflation has peaked and may see gradual disinflation due to lower global commodity prices.
In Pakistan, the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) fell by 0.91% for the week ending 30 July 2026, with notable price drops in tomatoes and chicken, though the index remained 9.05% higher than the previous year.
