India youth NEET rates reveal employment and education gaps
New data from the National Statistics Office (NSO) highlights a significant gap between official unemployment rates and the number of young people in India who are Not in Employment, Education or Training (NEET). While approximately 85 per cent of districts report an unemployment rate of 5.5 per cent or less, nearly 70 per cent of districts show that at least one in five young people aged 15 to 29 fall into the NEET category.
In nearly one-fourth of districts, more than 30 per cent of the youth population is classified as NEET. The NSO figures, released in a Labour Market Snapshot of Selected Districts, indicate that the NEET metric captures a broader demographic than traditional unemployment, including those who have stopped actively seeking work or are not currently enrolled in training programs.
Among the 100 most populous districts, South 24 Parganas in West Bengal and Araria in Bihar were noted for their specific demographic challenges regarding these metrics.
