Indian American candidates seek historic political milestones in U.S. elections

Several Indian-American candidates are pursuing historic political milestones in upcoming elections across multiple U.S. states.

In Los Angeles, City Council member Nithya Raman is running for mayor in a nonpartisan contest against incumbent Karen Bass. A recent Manhattan Institute poll placed Raman at 38 percent and Bass at 32 percent, with a margin of error of 4.6 percentage points. Raman has centered her campaign on the need for housing development across all city neighborhoods.

In Texas, Democrat Pooja Sethi is contesting the open House District 47 seat against Republican Jennifer Mushtaler. Sethi, an immigration lawyer and chair of the Travis County Democratic Party, won her primary with approximately 76 percent of the vote. If successful, she would become the first Indian American and the first Hindu elected to the Texas Legislature.

In Georgia, Democrat Jyot Singh is running for House District 97 in Gwinnett County against Republican Yassin Moghazy. Singh, who won his May primary with 59.1 percent of the vote, is campaigning to become the state's first Sikh elected official.
