Indian Army enhances high-altitude defense and surveillance capabilities

The Indian Army is advancing its technological capabilities for high-altitude warfare through the development of the Zorawar light tank and the deployment of the Akashteer air defense system.

Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Larsen & Toubro (L&T), the Zorawar light tank is being designed specifically for extreme conditions above 14,000 feet. To address modern battlefield dynamics, the Army has mandated the integration of organic reconnaissance drones and counter-unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS). The project focuses on maintaining a high power-to-weight ratio to ensure agility in the oxygen-depleted, sub-zero environments of the Himalayas.

Simultaneously, the Army has deployed the Akashteer Air Defence Control and Reporting System across its Northern Sector. Developed by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), this indigenous mobile network automates threat detection and sensor-to-shooter coordination. By integrating various radar and missile platforms, Akashteer provides a unified air picture, reducing reaction times against drones, missiles, and aircraft in rugged, mountainous terrain.
