Indian Army defense and surveillance modernization
Overview
The Indian Army is implementing various technological upgrades to enhance its defensive capabilities and surveillance across different sectors.
In response to an increase in cross-border drone activity, particularly along the India-Pakistan border, the Army is planning to install multi-tier steel mesh screens. These passive physical barriers, featuring non-reflective coatings and camouflage, are designed to protect sensitive infrastructure like command centers and ammunition storage from unmanned aerial system (UAS) attacks.
Additionally, the Army is advancing high-altitude warfare capabilities through the development of the Zorawar light tank, designed for extreme conditions above 14,000 feet. To improve air defense, the Akashteer Air Defence Control and Reporting System has been deployed in the Northern Sector. This indigenous mobile network automates threat detection and sensor-to-shooter coordination to provide a unified air picture against drones, missiles, and aircraft in mountainous terrain.
