Indian automakers expand CNG and hybrid vehicle lineups
The Indian automotive market is seeing a significant shift toward alternative fuels, with CNG, hybrid, and electric vehicles accounting for nearly 42% of market share as of August 2026. CNG alone holds a 25.28% share, driven by rising petrol costs.
Maruti Suzuki is developing an in-house series hybrid powertrain aimed at mass-market models like the Fronx, Baleno, Swift, and Brezza. The Fronx hybrid is expected to achieve over 35kmpl using a 1.2-litre Z-Series engine. Additionally, several Maruti models, including the Celerio, WagonR, and Dzire, are noted for high CNG mileage, with the Celerio reaching up to 34.43km/kg.
Other manufacturers are expanding their CNG and hybrid portfolios. Kia is taking bookings for CNG versions of the Carens and the upcoming Carens Clavis. Hyundai is expected to introduce a new mid-size SUV with a potential under-floor CNG tank design to preserve boot space. Renault is also considering an underbody CNG tank for the Triber. Toyota is preparing a refreshed Glanza featuring updated design elements and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
