Indian automotive sector sees rising domestic demand in August

Automakers in India reported varied performance for August 2026, driven largely by rising domestic demand ahead of the festive season.

Honda Cars India Ltd. recorded total sales of 7,508 units. Domestic sales saw a significant 40% increase compared to August 2025, reaching 5,385 units, which the company attributed to festive demand starting with Onam and positive reception to the New City and ZR-V models. However, exports declined to 2,123 units from 2,924 units in the previous year.

Hero MotoCorp reported total dispatches of 568,398 units, a year-on-year increase from 553,727 units in August 2025. The company's VIDA electric vehicle unit showed strong momentum with 25,558 units dispatched, representing a 38% growth. While motorcycle dispatches saw a slight decrease, scooter volumes grew significantly to 74,547 units.
