Indian financial markets see growth in global and retail bond activity

Indian financial institutions are seeing increased activity in both the retail and global bond markets. According to Sameer Patil, Chief Business Officer at National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL), the launch of online bond platform providers (OBPPs) has driven positive growth in retail demand for corporate bonds. While Patil noted that wider awareness is necessary for this trend to reach all parts of the country, he confirmed that depository infrastructure is prepared for potential regulations allowing smaller-ticket bond transfers.

Simultaneously, Indian lenders have raised approximately USD 4 billion through global bond issuances between June 16 and August 13, 2026. Major transactions include a USD 750 million issuance by HDFC Bank, a USD 1 billion issuance by ICICI Bank, and a USD 500 million fundraise by State Bank of India (SBI). Citi India indicated that strong international investor interest in the Indian financial sector is expected to sustain this trend through the second half of 2026.
