India commissions three indigenous warships in Kolkata

Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioned three indigenously designed and built naval platforms at the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata on 21 June 2026. The vessels are INS Dunagiri – a Project 17A stealth frigate equipped with BrahMos cruise missiles and a medium‑range surface‑to‑air missile system; INS Sanshodhak – a large survey ship fitted with autonomous underwater vehicles and other hydrographic equipment for coastal and deep‑water mapping; and INS Agray – an Arnala‑class anti‑submarine warfare shallow‑water craft carrying lightweight torpedoes, indigenous rocket launchers and advanced sonar.

All three ships were designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata, with indigenous content exceeding 75 % and participation from more than 200 MSMEs. Modi linked the inductions to India’s broader “Atmanirbhar Bharat” drive, noting that maritime strength underpins economic and strategic influence. The ceremony coincided with International Yoga Day and World Hydrography Day, underscoring the link between naval capability, maritime trade routes, under‑sea data networks and future deep‑sea resources.

The additions bolster the Indian Navy’s combat, hydrographic and anti‑submarine capacities, complement a recent surge in indigenously built warships and submarines, and support the goal of fielding a modern, self‑reliant fleet.
