Indian Navy commissions three indigenous warships in Kolkata ceremony

On 21 June, Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended a ceremony at Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Port in Kolkata to commission three domestically built warships into the Indian Navy.

The vessels include the guided‑missile frigate INS Doonagiri, the anti‑submarine shallow‑water craft INS Agreh, and the large survey ship designated "Sanshodhak". All are products of Project 17A, which aims to produce a fleet of seven advanced frigates equipped with indigenous systems such as the Brahmos missile, Barak‑8 air‑defence missile, and the Varunastra torpedo.

The additions raise the navy’s tonnage and enhance its surface‑strike, anti‑submarine, and hydrographic capabilities, reflecting India’s push for self‑reliance in naval defence manufacturing.
