Indian officials defend electoral roll revision against Congress protests

Indian government officials have accused the Congress party of attempting to create anarchy and public confusion by opposing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi defended the SIR as a constitutional process designed to ensure accurate voter lists by removing ineligible entries. He claimed that approximately three crore entries involve deceased persons and another three crore involve duplicate or fake voters. Joshi alleged that the Congress is seeking the re-inclusion of 13 crore untraceable voters, including those who have died or migrated.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also criticized the opposition, stating that the SIR aims to provide updated and error-free voter lists. Dhami argued that the Congress party is attempting to undermine the credibility of the Election Commission of India due to political desperation following recent electoral defeats. He noted that similar revisions have been conducted in the past under Congress leadership.
