Narendra Modi launches three‑nation Indo‑Pacific tour of Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will begin a three‑nation tour from 6 July to 11 July 2026, visiting Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand. The trip is framed as a key element of India’s Act East policy, aiming to deepen strategic, economic and people‑to‑people ties across the Indo‑Pacific.

In Indonesia (6‑8 July) Modi will hold bilateral talks with President Prabowo Subianto, discuss maritime security, defence cooperation—including a possible expanded BrahMos missile purchase—and industry MoUs in health, space, food security and critical minerals such as nickel and copper. He will also visit the UNESCO‑listed Prambanan temple complex, where a cultural‑heritage project is under consideration, and will receive a book on Rabindranath Tagore’s historic Indonesian journey.

The Australian leg (10‑12 July) will feature the third India‑Australia Annual Summit, covering defence, trade, critical minerals, cybersecurity and supply‑chain resilience. Australian authorities have noted a prior social‑media threat against Modi’s visit, which is being investigated.

The tour will conclude in New Zealand (11 July) with a historic first official visit by an Indian prime minister, meeting Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to review the newly signed India‑New Zealand free‑trade agreement, investment commitments and broader cooperation. Indonesian religious leader groups have also asked that the visit address minority‑rights concerns in India.

Overall, the itinerary seeks to reinforce maritime connectivity, expand defence and economic partnerships, and showcase cultural links among the four nations.
