Indian rail engineers demand promotion and pay reforms from 8th Pay Commission

Railway engineers in India have formally urged the Central Government and the 8th Central Pay Commission to address long‑standing issues of career stagnation, delayed promotions and pay‑scale anomalies. Their demands include a time‑bound promotion mechanism, rationalisation of pay grades, removal of past pay‑commission anomalies and greater parity with other central engineering services, as well as a review of the Modified Assured Career Progression (MACP) framework.

The 8th Pay Commission, chaired by former Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, is conducting state‑level consultations ahead of its final recommendations expected between February and May 2027. The panel held a two‑day meeting in Bhubaneswar, Odisha on 6‑7 July and plans visits to other regions, reviewing working conditions of railway staff. Its proposals will affect roughly 5 million central government employees and 6.5 million pensioners.
