Indian Railways launches first hydrogen-powered pilot train

Indian Railways has launched its first hydrogen-powered train, moving the initiative to reduce carbon emissions from policy to practical implementation. Operating under the "Hydrogen for Tradition" scheme, the pilot train runs on an 89 km stretch within the Northern Railway zone, connecting Jind Junction, Kohana Junction, and Sonipat.

Unlike traditional electric trains that rely on overhead power lines, these hydrogen trains utilize fuel cell technology. Hydrogen stored on board reacts with oxygen to generate electricity, emitting only water vapor as a byproduct. This technology offers a zero-emission alternative and eliminates the need for expensive overhead electrification on difficult routes.

Experts suggest that for widespread adoption across India's vast railway network, hydrogen should be viewed as part of a new energy ecosystem rather than a direct replacement for the existing electrified network. The long-term scalability depends on the reduction of green hydrogen production costs and the development of supporting infrastructure.
