Indian seafarers stranded on MV AMIR1 at Ukraine's Chornomorsk port
Thirteen Indian seafarers are among the fifteen‑member crew of the Tanzanian‑flagged cargo vessel MV AMIR1, which is anchored at the port of Chornomorsk in southern Ukraine. Drone and missile attacks by Russian forces have intensified around the Black Sea, prompting the Forward Seamen’s Union of India (FSUI) to label the situation “terrible and life‑threatening” and to appeal for the crew’s immediate evacuation. The union has urged the Indian government, the shipowner and the vessel’s flag state to act urgently.
The Indian Embassy in Kyiv says it is monitoring the situation with “the highest priority” and is in constant contact with Ukrainian authorities, the shipowner and the flag state. Ukraine’s foreign ministry has publicly asked India to take a tougher stance against Russia and queried whether New Delhi will summon the Russian envoy again. The episode follows a series of attacks on commercial shipping in the Black Sea that have already killed at least five Indian seafarers, and India has previously summoned both Russian and Ukrainian diplomats in response to those incidents.
