Indian States Gujarat and Maharashtra Issue School Closures Due to Heavy Rain

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Gujarat, forecasting very heavy rain across districts such as Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Surat, with up to 20 inches expected in Ahmedabad. Authorities ordered the closure of all schools and colleges in the affected districts and set up control rooms, while urging residents to stay indoors and avoid flood‑prone areas.

In Maharashtra, an orange alert was declared for Nagpur district as intense thunderstorms were expected from July 28‑30. The district collector ordered a holiday for all government and private schools, colleges and anganwadi centres, and mobilised disaster‑response teams to manage potential flooding and water‑logging. Residents were also advised to remain cautious and limit travel.
