Indian Super League announces 2026-27 season details
The Indian Super League (ISL) has announced its 2026-27 season, which is set to begin on October 10 and run through May 2027. Moving into a new club-led era in collaboration with the All India Football Federation (AIFF), the league will return to a traditional home-and-away, round-robin format. The season will feature 163 matches and 13 confirmed teams, though Churchill Brothers FC’s participation remains subject to regulatory approval. The team finishing at the top of the table will be crowned Shield Winners and earn a spot in Asian competition, while a returning play-off format will see the top six teams compete for the ISL Cup.
Diamond Harbour FC, the 2025-26 Indian Football League winners, will not participate in the ISL this season due to failing to meet administrative fee requirements. Consequently, they will be placed at the bottom of the standings and will compete in the IFL for the 2027-28 season.
In women’s football, the AIFF announced that the Indian Women’s League (IWL) will kick off on October 16, 2026, followed by the IWL 2 group stage on October 23. The AIFF also introduced enhanced coaching license requirements for both leagues, effective from the 2027-28 season, to improve technical standards. Additionally, NorthEast United FC has unveiled its new season jersey in Mumbai through a partnership with Reebok.
