Indian Super League faces media rights uncertainty
The Indian Super League (ISL) is facing significant uncertainty regarding its upcoming season and commercial future. Following the expiration of the Master Rights Agreement with Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL), the league has transitioned to a club-led model. However, this transition has encountered a major hurdle: only one bid has been received for the next four-season media rights cycle.
The Request for Proposal (RFP), issued by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) on July 25, offered two packages covering media, broadcast, digital, and production rights. The bidding deadline passed on August 12, and technical bids are scheduled to be opened on August 14.
Due to the lack of competitive bidding, the league's start date, originally anticipated for early September, is now unlikely. Observers suggest a more pragmatic start date may be after the FIFA international window closes on October 6. This delay adds pressure to clubs regarding financial stability, specifically concerning upcoming installment payments to the AIFF and the ability to meet player salary obligations.
