Indian training ship INS Sudarshini arrives in Lisbon

The Indian training ship INS Sudarshini has arrived in Lisbon, symbolizing the maritime connection between India and Portugal. The vessel, built in the city of Vasco da Gama in Goa, serves as a floating ambassador for India and a training platform for naval cadets.

Commander N. Ravikanth noted that while the ship utilizes modern technology, cadets are still taught traditional skills such as celestial navigation and visual communication to ensure a fundamental understanding of maritime history. This training supports the growth of the Indian Navy, which aims to expand its fleet to 200 warships by 2035, including current assets like two aircraft carriers and three nuclear-powered submarines.

The visit highlights the historical links between the two nations, dating back to the late 15th century when Portuguese explorers reached Calicut. Discussions surrounding the era emphasized the role of maritime expertise, including the contributions of pilots from Gujarat in navigating the monsoon winds.
