Indian Navy regional outreach continues

Overview

In June 2026 the Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet deployed a task group of warships – INS Udaygiri, INS Kavaratti and INS Taragiri – on goodwill visits to Vietnam, Thailand and other Southeast Asian ports, supported by INS Shakti. At the same time, the sail‑training ship INS Sudarshini completed its trans‑oceanic “Lokayan 26” voyage, calling at Norfolk and Baltimore.

The outreach shifted north in July when INS Sudarshini entered Boston Harbor on 12 July as part of the international Sail Boston 250 programme marking the United States’ Semiquincentennial. The vessel sailed under the Indian tricolour, with Consul General Raghuram S boarding at sea, and participated in the Parade of Sails and the accompanying LOKAYAN 2026 exhibition. Organisers projected more than four million visitors in Boston between 11 July and 16 July, making the port call the final North‑American stop after New York’s Independence Day celebrations.

Following the Boston festivities, INS Sudarshini departed on 27 July for Ponta Delgada in the Azores, Portugal, continuing its Lokayan 2026 expedition. The ship’s visit showcased India’s maritime heritage, facilitated cultural exchange and affirmed diplomatic ties with the United States and other partner nations.
