FEMA approves major disaster declaration for 21 Indiana counties
The federal government has approved a major disaster declaration for 21 Indiana counties following historic storms and flooding that began in mid-August. The declaration, requested by Governor Mike Braun, provides millions of dollars in federal aid through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for both individual assistance to households and public assistance for infrastructure repairs.
More than 13,000 Hoosiers have already applied for federal disaster relief. FEMA officials have advised residents to apply immediately, noting that individuals have 60 days to seek assistance. While 21 counties are currently approved for individual aid, FEMA is still reviewing damage data for 33 additional counties requested by the state.
To facilitate recovery, Indiana has launched a new texting tool via Indiana 211, allowing residents to text ‘IN211HELP’ to 898-211 to access disaster-specific resources based on their zip code. Additionally, local agricultural organizations Indiana Pork and Indiana Beef have donated food from the Indiana State Fair to the Smoking Pastor Project to provide meals to impacted communities and first responders.
