Indiana tax deadlines extended for August storm survivors
Governor Mike Braun has announced that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR) are extending tax filing and payment deadlines for residents and businesses impacted by severe storms. The weather events, which included tornadoes, flooding, and straight-line winds, began on August 11, 2026.
The extension applies to certain tax deadlines falling between August 11, 2026, and February 1, 2027. Eligible taxpayers in the affected areas will now have until February 1, 2027, to file and make eligible payments. This includes individuals who previously held a valid extension for their 2025 individual income tax returns, though payments specifically owed for those 2025 returns—originally due April 15, 2026—are not eligible for this postponement.
The relief is designated for 21 Indiana counties: Carroll, Dearborn, Decatur, Delaware, Fayette, Franklin, Hamilton, Hancock, Henry, Lake, LaPorte, Madison, Marion, Morgan, Porter, Pulaski, Randolph, Rush, Tipton, Union, and Wayne. Officials advised taxpayers who receive penalty notices regarding dates within the postponement period to contact the IRS or DOR to request an abatement.
