Indiana severe weather disaster relief

Overview

Following severe weather events including tornadoes, flooding, and straight-line winds that began on August 11, 2026, Governor Mike Braun announced tax relief and debris cleanup assistance for impacted Indiana residents and businesses.

The Indiana Department of Revenue and the IRS have extended tax filing and payment deadlines for 21 affected counties: Carroll, Dearborn, Decatur, Delaware, Fayette, Franklin, Hamilton, Hancock, Henry, Lake, LaPorte, Madison, Marion, Morgan, Porter, Pulaski, Randolph, Rush, Tipton, Union, and Wayne. For deadlines falling between August 11, 2026, and February 1, 2027, eligible taxpayers now have until February 1, 2027, to comply.

To assist with recovery, the state is reducing debris removal costs for eleven counties: Delaware, Fayette, Franklin, Hamilton, Henry, LaPorte, Lake, Madison, Porter, Tipton, and Wayne. Under a federal Major Disaster Declaration, FEMA will reimburse 75 percent of eligible costs, while the State of Indiana will cover 75 percent of the remaining local share, leaving local governments responsible for only 6.25 percent of eligible project costs.

In response to historic flooding, new “one-stop shop” recovery sites are opening in Hamilton and LaPorte counties to provide access to FEMA individual assistance, U.S. Small Business Administration disaster loans, housing support, and mental health referrals. More than 5,000 storm victims have utilized state recovery sites to date.

Additionally, Governor Braun has renewed the state’s energy emergency, extending the suspension of the Gasoline Use Tax and Gasoline Excise Tax through November 4 to mitigate high fuel prices. The Governor also suspended special fuel restrictions for dyed diesel to assist the agricultural community.
