Indiana tornadoes wreck homes, farms and power lines

A series of tornadoes swept across northern Indiana on Thursday, producing an EF‑3 touchdown near Kouts in Porter County with winds estimated at 136‑165 mph. The storm caused extensive damage to homes and businesses in Porter, LaPorte and surrounding counties, knocked down power lines, and left thousands without electricity. Farmers also face flooded fields and damaged irrigation after heavy rain saturated the area, complicating planting of corn and specialty crops.

In the Greenwood community, volunteers and contractors began cleanup on Friday, shoring up a damaged church roof and removing fallen trees that struck homes. Residents expressed concern over repair costs and insurance claims while neighbors rallied to clear debris and support one another.

Emergency crews, utility workers and the Red Cross continue damage assessments and recovery efforts across the affected region.
