IndianOil begins $25M bunkering expansion at Port Louis

IndianOil Mauritius Ltd has commenced a $25 million expansion of its marine bunkering infrastructure at Port Louis to support Mauritius’ goal of becoming a strategic Indian Ocean fuel hub. The project includes the construction of a 27,500-tonne bunker fuel storage facility at Mer Rouge, featuring five storage tanks and pipeline connectivity to existing terminals.

During an official visit to Mauritius, Indian Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri met with Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam to discuss energy cooperation. The visit resulted in a Government-to-Government Memorandum of Understanding on oil and gas cooperation, alongside an agreement between Indian Oil Corp Ltd and the State Trading Corporation of Mauritius. These agreements aim to provide long-term supply certainty for petrol, diesel, marine gas oil, and aviation turbine fuel.

The expansion is intended to help Mauritius meet rising maritime demand, with the country targeting approximately 6,000 vessel calls annually. This initiative is part of a broader energy partnership between India and Mauritius, which includes a five-year agreement for fuel imports and a $680 million special economic package.
