India-Mauritius energy cooperation agreement

Overview

India and Mauritius have established a strategic energy partnership aimed at securing fuel supplies and developing Mauritius as a maritime bunkering hub in the Indian Ocean.

Following a visit by Indian Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, the two nations signed a five-year agreement where the Indian Oil Corporation will supply Mauritius’ entire import requirements for petrol, diesel, and aviation turbine fuel. This pact is intended to protect the island nation from global price volatility and supply disruptions.

In conjunction with these supply agreements, a $25 million expansion of marine bunkering infrastructure has commenced at Port Louis. This project includes the construction of a 27,500-tonne bunker fuel storage facility at Mer Rouge. Additionally, the nations signed a Memorandum of Understanding to cooperate on oil and gas sectors, including capacity building and biofuels such as ethanol blending and sustainable aviation fuel.
