India's 8th Pay Commission Begins Consultations Impacting Millions of Employees and Pensioners

The 8th Pay Commission has opened its two‑day consultative meeting in Lucknow, hearing representatives of central government staff, pensioners, railway and defence personnel, and various employee organisations. The commission is collecting suggestions on wages, pensions and allowances before drafting its final report, which officials expect to submit to the Finance Minister by March 2027, possibly as early as May 2027.

Subsequent regional meetings are scheduled for Bhubaneswar (6‑7 July) and Kolkata (9‑10 July). The commission’s recommendations could affect roughly 5.5 million central employees and 6.9 million pensioners. Stakeholders have proposed a fit‑ment factor of up to 3.83, which could raise the minimum salary to about ₹68,940, though final decisions remain pending.
