India's 8th Pay Commission continues consultations on salary and pension revisions
The 8th Pay Commission, established by the Indian central government on November 3, 2025, is currently in the consultation and recommendation stage. Led by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, the three-member panel includes Professor Pulak Ghosh as a part-time member and Pankaj Jain as Member-Secretary.
The commission is tasked with reviewing salaries, allowances, pensions, and service conditions for eligible employees and pensioners. It has an 18-month mandate to submit its final report, placing the expected deadline around May 2027. Recent activities include consultation meetings in various locations, such as Mumbai in late October 2026 and Bengaluru earlier in the month.
While various employee unions have proposed different fitment factors—with some suggesting multipliers of 3.83 or 4.00—the government has not yet announced an approved fitment factor, a revised pay matrix, or a final implementation date. The commission's recommendations will be submitted to the government for consideration and subsequent approval.
