India's 8th Pay Commission faces union demand for ₹69,000 minimum salary and high arrears estimates

A delegation of the Confederation of Central Government Employees and Workers met the 8th Central Pay Commission on June 22, urging it to adopt a minimum basic pay of ₹69,000 per month, a 3.83 fitment factor, restoration of the Old Pension Scheme, higher house‑rent allowance and other financial upgradations. The body also proposed merging several pay levels and extending welfare advances to casual and contractual staff.

Separate analysis of the commission’s pending recommendations estimates that, depending on the fitment factor applied, arrears for central government employees could range from about ₹3.6 lakh to as much as ₹10.8 lakh for senior staff. The timing of implementation is expected by mid‑2027, with the final report due after stakeholder consultations.

Both pieces note that the exact salary hike and arrears will be confirmed only after the government officially approves the commission’s final report.
