India's 8th Pay Commission sparks debate over potential salary doubling
The Indian government’s 8th Pay Commission is generating intense discussion among central government employees and pensioners. While the final fitment factor has not been announced, employee unions are pressing for a fitment factor of 2.0, which would double the basic pay on paper. Analysts note that such a factor would not double total take‑home salary because the existing Dearness Allowance (DA) would be absorbed into the new pay structure and reset to zero.
Annual increments of around 3 % and semi‑annual DA revisions compound over time, leading some calculations to suggest that salaries could roughly double over a seven‑year horizon if the DA is merged with basic pay once it reaches a set threshold. The Institute for Research in Salary and Taxation (IRSTA) has proposed a minimum pay of INR 52,000 with a 2.92 fitment factor, highlighting the range of possible outcomes. The government has yet to release a definitive decision, leaving the sector awaiting clarification.
