India's AMCA Fighter Program Considers Rolls‑Royce and Safran Engines

India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme is weighing alternatives to the American GE F414 engine after price talks stalled, with the French Safran and British Rolls‑Royce emerging as the main contenders. Negotiations with GE hit a deadlock when the company sought a price roughly three times the earlier estimate of ₹70‑80 crore per engine, jeopardising timelines for the AMCA Mk‑1, which was designed around the F414, and for other projects such as the Tejas Mk‑2 and TEDBF.

Safran proposes a derivative of its M88 engine, already used on the Rafale fighters in Indian service, offering full technology transfer and an established maintenance base in Hyderabad. Rolls‑Royce counters with a clean‑sheet sixth‑generation adaptive‑cycle turbofan, promising 100 % technology transfer and intellectual‑property ownership, and citing its recent work on variable‑cycle engines under the Global Combat Air Programme.

India aims for its first indigenous fifth‑generation stealth fighter to fly by 2028, with engine development targets including a core test by 2030 and production readiness by 2036. The Defence Research and Development Organisation and the Aeronautical Development Agency stress that the engine choice will affect strategic autonomy, cost, and the country’s long‑term aerospace capabilities, with the government already allocating over ₹15,000 crore for the prototype phase.
